What is the most important tool to buy when beginning machine embroidery?

Connector strings are a harsh reality of doing machine embroidery. Connector strings are the threads that join disparate elements in machine embroidery. Well designed embroidery files minimize the number of connector strings but sometimes – for even the most skilled digitizer – it is impossible to eliminate them completely – even though there are tools integrated within the digitizing software to help you minimize them.

So what is the best way to trim those tiny little connector strings? This was the question I asked the lady it Make it Sew fabrics in St. Louis very shortly after I started using my embroidery machine. She hardly let me finish my question before she responded by simply handing me a little thread nipper, with a “This is what you need, Hun.”

The thread nipper was exactly what I needed. I have used this little tool like crazy over the past few years and it is a miracle that I have held on to it. No other tool will trim the connector strings so closely – not a thread ripper, not a small pair of scissors, nuthin! If you don’t have one and you are new to machine embroidery, buck up and get one. It is exactly what you need.
