I think I discovered my new favorite show. I had an evening to myself in Leiden (in the Netherlands) the night before I went home on my recent trip. So I was sitting in bed, catching up on some emails and trying to find something (preferably in English) to watch on TV – and then – I discovered “The Great British Sewing Bee.”

OMG – do they know I am visitng and decide to air the show? “The Great British Sewing Bee” is the silliest thing ever. It is a reality competition show for amateur home sewers where they “take on challenges as they compete to be named Britain’s best home sewer.” I came in a bit late but I think the episode I was watching was a Christamas special where the objective was to create home sewing gift ideas that could be made in under an hour and a half.

The competitors were pretty diverse and entertaining. In true reality show style they knocked each other’s ideas in their confessionals but to their faces they only remarked how “brilliant” their project was turning out. I feel in love with the oldest competitor on the show who was the woman to beat, an octogenarian with years of experience and a super precise hand.

My favorite comment was from the man who was showing off his reindeer sweater and explaining his motivation.

“I think that humiliating our children by dressing them in idiotic knitwear is a tradition we must uphold as a nation.”

Agreed. I love this show.
