Norfolk, VA is my husband’s hometown and one of my favorite places to visit. Of course it is fun hanging out with all the cousins and friends, but I also adore the city and the water and the sense of civic pride.
One way in which Norfolk shows off it’s community pride is through the mermaids on parade throughout the city. The mermaids came about after Chicago put their cows on parade back in the mid 1990s. Mermaids seemed like the perfect city symbol as it is surrounded by water, located right in the mouth of the Chesapeake bay. If you drive around Norfolk, you will see mermaids decorated in a myriad of ways located throughout the city.
Seeing all these mermaids around town made me think that they would be a great symbol to digitize – especially for my girls who love Norfolk and the time they spend there hanging out with their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. I can imagine them sporting t-shirts with mermaids appliqued on the front in cute, retro cotton fabrics.
Stay tuned for the design. I have officially added it to my to do list.
