I have made embroidered placemats with an initial monogram in the past and the gift recipient really seemed to like them. So I thought this would be a great gift for my mother-in-law, especially since a while back I embroidered a set of napkins with a deep red initial on them, and she uses them frequently.

The last time I embroidered placemats, I used the Roman Wreath Design by Meringue Designs. But after seeing how well my own modern wreath design turned out – I decided to go for it and use this design for the placemats.

I bought these deep red placemats at Walmart for about $2/ea. They were actually pretty ideal for embroidery. They stuck nicely to the stabilizer and did not pucker or distort when being stitched. Not bad for two bucks!

One aspect of the design that made it easy to stitch out was the order in which I did the digitizing. The first element of the design that was stitched out was the circle. This kept the placemat in place while the rest of the design stitched out.

This design is now available on theĀ Machine Embroidery Geek Store

Perhaps you might recall the red placemats I made for my mother-in-law embroidered with the modern wreath initial design? […]
