The pink whale gets a friend… expanding my line of preppy appliqué animals

A few days ago I appliqued a baby bib for our neighbors baby, Sadie (the pink one with the whale on it). I haven’t given them the pink bib that I made yet, partly because I haven’t gotten around to it. But I also felt like a gift of one bib with a pink whale on it was a little bit random… and cheap. But two bibs that went together thematically (preppy animal iconography) both embroidered with Sadie’s name felt a bit more like a finished package.
So now I had the perfect opportunity to digitize a friend for my little whale. In deciding on what, exactly it should be, I thought… the whale is a preppy whale, what other animals do we associate with the 1980 preppy era… duh! an alligator!!
To make the alligator coordinate with my existing whale design, I poured over various clipart libraries looking for an a simple alligator rendering that had that same amount of detail as the whale. Once I found my inspiration, I digitized the alligator and sized it similarly to the whale.
To make the bibs coordinate even more, I stitched out Sadie’s name in the same typeface at relatively same location on the bibs. Also – since the bibs came from the same pack of five, they are the same size, style and the colors are the same brightness. So the two bibs really feel like they go together.
Now I feel much better about my gift to the neighbors. Really – I am sure they would have been happy with one bib. This was clearly about me and wanting to present more of a finished package. And, yes, the whale did need a friend.
