The “hang loose” or shaka sign became popular among Hawaiian surfers in the 1960s. There are many theories about it’s origin. One legend is it originated from a Hawaiian fisherman who lost his three middle fingers in a sugar mill accident. He was then relegated to signaling the sugar train. When local children started imitating the gesture – it just caught on with the locals.
